Typography on the web
There is a certain mystique about typography. When it's done wrong, it's obvious. When it's done right, we barely notice.
Whilst there are no alternatives to 'lessons learned' over time, when it comes to creating legible text for the web, several resources have helped me:
Better Web Typography for a Better Web
URL - https://betterwebtype.com/web-typography-book/ Cost - £20 eBook
The book will teach you about typeface history and what makes a typeface suitable for the web. More importantly, it explains how the composition of your typefaces is the most important aspect of all. Legibility is king.
Although it is not free, the author (Matej Latin) has written a concise and useful book. You can download a free sample on his website.
Utopia Fluid Text
URL - https://utopia.fyi/ Cost - Free
Whether or not you use their generated CSS for your type, this project explains the value of fluid text scaling online.
Pens 'n' Paper
Pick up a newspaper or magazine. Use a pen and a ruler to draw straight lines around all the blocks of text. Next, draw straight lines between each paragraph to reveal the margins between the text. You'll begin to get a sense of why the layout 'seems to work'. Look out for repetition in spacing and consistent distance between the copy.
